Has Primary Care Been Amazon-ized?

Ends on

"Timothy Hoff's new book ""Next in Line"" argues that health care -- and especially primary care -- has become corporatized.

Seemingly, the basis of the trust relation between clinicians and patients has been eroded by features that work well in the new world of online retail. Those features include: having a relationship with a brand, as opposed to an individual person; valuing economic outcomes over intangibles, such as trust; and emphasizing the value of measurement per se, rather than measuring things of value, for example, reassurance and continuity.

What's to be done? Are clinicians doomed to practice in highly structured environments where everything is measured and the EHR is the third party in the examining room? Your questions and comments will help illuminate the way forward."
