Examines adult patients to ensure proper injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. 
Requests necessary tests and follow-up visits, and refers patients to specialists, as necessary.
May require at least 2-4 years of internal medicine experience.
Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. 
Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Focus primarily on quality of life and functional ability.
Determine when it is no longer medically safe for seniors to live alone and counsel them on alternative living arrangements.  Also counsel patients and families on end of life care.
Deal with diseases and conditions that often accompany old age, such as Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, memory loss, chronic heart and lung disease, incontinence, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and vision and hearing problems.
Work with patients who take a variety of medications.  Develop drug regimens that avoid negative drug interactions.
