There is a great deal of variation in the way in which data is captured in the medical record. Data is entered as free text dictation, scanned documents, direct data entry fields and feeds from external sources. The ability to capture the appropriate data from discrete EMR fields for quality reporting and initiatives has been a source of constant frustration.
Since 2013, we have been collaborating with Pfizer, Inc. to extract and analyze data using a rigorous natural language processing (NLP) software program developed by CliniWorks with funding and analytical support provided by Pfizer. This program reviewed comprehensive records, including dictated and scanned information for the past five years and analyzes data on a daily basis.
Through this collaboration, we have been able to capture and analyze a much more representative picture of our actual quality data and population health metrics than the limited view from the EMR reporting system. (see link below for more data)
