Medical students are trained to make quick and often presumptuous judgments about patients. However, we regularly fail to consider how these judgments affect the patient-provider relationship. Through a community-based participatory research model, C-STAHR currently works with community members in the Denver-metro area to better understand the history and continued mechanisms of discrimination in the healthcare setting. Using this research, we have developed community-oriented strategies that empower patients and promote equity. Our current projects include a handout and survey to provide communication tools to patients and ensure their goals are met. We have also created a leadership and education program to excite and engage underserved youth and encourage careers in healthcare.
