RTM Vital Signs, LC is a medical device start-up company focused on supporting the transformation of healthcare from reactive and hospital-centered to preventive, proactive, evidence-based and person-centered. The company's core objective is real-time sensing, monitoring and analyzing an ambulatory patient's health information.
THE PROBLEM: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally (~31%) as well as the most significant contributor to US healthcare costs ($1 in every $6), including high cost unnecessary emergency room visits. Over 1000 people in the US alone die suddenly each day, primarily from adverse cardiac events. There are over 100 million people in the US taking medication for hypertension - most are outside the optimal range of blood pressure (BP) 60-70% of the time. YET TODAY, THERE IS NO KNOWLEDGE OR UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL SIGNS OF AN IMPENDING CARDIAC EVENT IN TIME FOR APPROPRIATE PREVNETIVE INTERVENTION, OR WHICH CAN ENABLE ACCURATE BP CONTROL.
THE SOLUTION: RTM is developing a miniature, long-term monitoring system, implantable under local anesthesia in an outpatient procedure that accurately and continuously measures the arterial BP waveform, the electrocardiogram, respiratory rate, tidal volume, hemoglobin oxygen saturation, and sounds of the heart, lungs and upper airway in out-of-hospital patients with high-risk cardiovascular disease. Sensor data will feed predictive algorithms to improve diagnostics and medication dosing related to hypertension and other cardiac issues, ultimately leading to prediction and prevention of adverse cardiac events. Real-time data will be transmitted to a smart phone or central monitoring station to timely alert patient, caregiver, and/or emergency care. Recent data captured by the device can also be downloaded on-demand by EMR personnel, physicians or clinicians as needed. Improved monitoring, diagnosis and management of cardiac care can save lives, lower costs and expand knowledge. No active patient involvement or reporting is needed.
THE MARKET: The target market for the RTM cardiac device includes ambulatory stroke survivors (>700,000 in the US), people with poorly controlled high BP (>40 million in the US) or chronic cardiovascular disease (>30 million in the US) including heart failure, arrhythmia, renal failure, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis. The total US cardio market is ~$320 billion today. Implantable cardiovascular devices, primarily pacemakers, account for over $43 billion of cardio device sales and over 12 million patients are being monitored for cardiac rhythm anomalies.
BUSINESS MODEL: The two revenue sources for RTM's cardiac monitor are sale of device (by physician prescription) & monthly central station monitoring charge. RTM's goals are to demonstrate the efficacy & long-term accuracy of the device through in-vitro and in-vivo animal studies at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia in the first half of 2019, establish strong IP protection (2 patents granted, 14 pending), & partner with/sell to a corporate partner for subsequent human trials and commercialization. Note that existing cardiac failure device & implementation is fully reimbursable.
COMPETITION: No commercially available device/methodology is capable of the long-term continuous, accurate monitoring of BP provided by the RTM device. Current telemonitoring and commercial wearable monitors are uncomfortable, have limited accuracy & patient compliance, provide intermittent data, are subject to interference, & are not accepted for clinical applications.
The RTM proprietary, patent-protected cardiac monitoring system is the only known real-time vital-sign data collection device with algorithms accurate enough for dosing medication & diagnosing an acute change in cardiac health. The device can revolutionize the way clinicians manage ambulatory patients with cardiovascular disease & increase knowledge of cardiac health.
