A technology, which continuously collects measurements of stress factors of abstinence and relapse, could help researchers understand psychophysiological stress mechanisms acting in smoking behavior, and develop personalized interventions. Changes in heart rate, electro dermal activity (skin conductance), and respiration are some of the indicators of increase in stress level. Through smartwatch Embrace, these can be measured and transmitted to a smartphone in real-time. The changes in posture and physical activity can also be tracked by the smartwatch’s accelerometer. We’ll work with a group of smokers who contemplate quitting. The participants will be asked to wear the smartwatch during the day. Through custom stress recognition software, the collected measurements will be analyzed in order to estimate the current situation the smoker is in, and associate the psychophysiological arousal pattern of the smoker with that specific situation.
