Technology is vital in the advancement of patient care. Often, the most important contributions are those that allow the initial evaluation and assessment of the patient to be carried out in an effective manner. With the shift to population health, patients will need timely access to quality care. However, as reimbursements for healthcare decline, many smaller hospitals do not have the resources to staff specialist 24 hours a day. Placing Google Glasses in our smaller community hospitals, we would evaluate and assess patients with behavioral health (BH) disturbances. Although video-conferencing has been used effectively in smaller communities, many patients with a BH crisis are often paranoid and intimidated by tele-psychiatry assessments. Google Glasses offers a less intrusive, real time method for consultations and evaluation of patients. This technology improves treatment for BH patients, reduce delays in patient care, and offer access to patients in rural areas.
