With the nationwide lack of behavioral healthcare specialists (BHS), primary care providers (PCPs) are seeing higher volumes of patients suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health ailments. This has created a need for consultations for higher acuity patients within the primary care arena. Typically PCPs write a referral for the BHS, which then must be processed, resulting in a delay in patient care. With Google Glasses, the PCPs could consult the BHS real time while the patient is evaluated in the primary care office. This would reduce the delay in patient and offer immediate assistance for emergent cases. This technology offers PCPs immediate access to BHS for assessments and interventions. PCPs could utilize nurses or mid-levels to conduct the interview under the direction of the BHS. This multidisciplinary treatment approach integrates mental health care into primary care, which offers an opportunity to improve the quality of patient care.
