As behavioral health (BH) issues grow nationwide, the need for appropriate care in the community is critical. This has led to the need for the presence of BH specialists in atypical environments such as the public school systems. To address this need, Google Glasses would be piloted in select schools for the assessment of children that typically are directed to an emergency department or BH crisis centers, which results in a delay in patient care, increased treatment cost, and delays in treatment of truly emergent patients. This also may not always be the most appropriate site of care, and may contribute to increased anxiety and emotional trauma to the current problem. This project would allow counselors to conduct a real time interview with behavioral health specialists to conduct a thorough evaluation and direct the patient to the appropriate site of care. As the process improves, the project could equip all schools in the county with the technology.
