The demand for access to behavioral healthcare services remains significantly high in the United States. To aid with high demand and better serve the community, providing Novant Health’s Critical Care Transport (CCT) team with Google Glasses could offer psychiatric assessment in the field with a trained provider instead of law enforcement. The interface with behavioral health specialists and CCT created by this technology could assist in determining the most appropriate and needed level of care. This new process would facilitate participation by trained individuals; especially since only 22% of police officers have received Crisis Intervention Team training as of January 2014 according to the N.C. chapter of NAMI. The process would also result in the more appropriate use of law enforcement services. Rather than the default for legal or emergency care dispositions, psychiatric care could be delivered at the site, improving the availability and quality of behavioral healthcare services.
