Notwithstanding the ethical and social intricacies of being a "three parent baby", do you think there has been enough discussion about the alternative for these couples, which is knowingly bringing an affected child into the world?
A double standard is rather evident. How can we stigmatize parents for not vaccinating a child, and yet have difficulty understanding why parents are willing to take unconventional means to bring a healthy child into the world? We have long studied biological mechanisms that have allowed us to develop therapies and cures for diseases, benefiting millions. Mitochondrial diseases are not inherently exempt to this reality. Similar discussions have arisen following other controversial infertility treatments such as the uterine transplant, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis.
