Impairments in short term memory brought about by Alzheimer's disease or similar dementias or conditions can produce high levels of stress and anxiety. Proposed device is a self-contained body worn camera and playback screen to function as a surrogate for short term memory by allowing the wearer to capture and review events from the recent past.
Smartphones have sufficient ability to run a custom app to continuously capture of first person POV video. Design for a lanyard style harness will incorporate means to extend battery life through increased capacity and solar generation.
Plans do not include network capabilities, but as a connected device additional functions can include mapping data for emergency way finding for individuals who wander, and live video streaming to a companion or loved one to foster greater patient autonomy.
Project can scale through use of donated phones or lower cost systems like Google's planned Project Ara.
