Gestation Diabetes effects approx 3-10% of the 4 million pregnancy in the United States annually. If left untreated, it can lead to growth abnormalities and chemical imbalances after birth requiring NICU admission. The first line treatment upon diagnosis of gestational diabetes is diet and exercise. Some patients will require medication to control blood glucose.
Currently wearable technology is very popular to monitor fitness activity. I would like to start a pilot study to study effect of wearable fitness monitor (Misfit Shine) and the progression of gestational diabetes. Will prescribing the Misfit Shine with a set exercise goal help control gestational diabetes. Endpoints of the study would include the need and amount of glucose control medications, amount of exercise daily, % of patients meeting exercise goals and patient's own feedback of using the device.
