Many of you mentioned childbearing, and its impact on women’s career advancement. Dr. Pories pointed out that women are frequently unable to pursue research and publications (often a prerequisite for leadership roles) early in their careers due to the labor-intensive responsibilities of setting up a practice and raising young children.
I am interested in how our panelists have been able to balance work and family life—especially in the infancy of their careers. Have you felt as though you’ve had to make sacrifices in your personal life in order to advance your career? Were you primarily responsible for childcare, or did you recruit help from partners or family members? Does your institution offer services like on-site child care, and have you felt supported in decisions regarding pregnancy and time off?
