As many of you pointed out, the barriers to gender parity in leadership are complex and multifactorial. Today I’d like to delve deeper into the “gender climate” of medical institutions, and explore environmental factors that make it difficult for women to thrive.
What are some subtle forms of gender-based discrimination that you have experienced or observed? How common is overt sexual harassment? For those of you in male-dominated specialties, is networking a challenge? Does the “old boys’ club” mentality still exist at higher levels of leadership?
