Thank you all for contributing to such a lively and productive discussion! We have identified many fascinating issues over the past few days. Today, I would like to switch our focus to problem solving. As many of the challenges to gender parity are rooted in subtle behavioral norms, it is clear that there are no “quick fixes!”
Several of you have already put forth some interesting proposals, including: promoting diversity in hiring committees, increasing availability of leadership training programs, and aiming for salary transparency. Dr. Rohr-Kirchgraber shared a bit about a program at her home institution called “Negotiating the Divide,” which focuses discussion on gender differences in physician and scientist salaries.
For our panelists: Can you think of specific ways that we can close the gender gap in leadership? What has your institution done to support their women physicians? How were these programs received? Were they successful?
