The ACA has led to a substantial increase in the number of patients that are insured. Although this is a step in the right direction, the 2013 Massachusetts Health Reform Survey (MHRS) has shown that healthcare bills from utilization (affordability) is a major concern - especially among those individuals at or below the 300% of the federal poverty level. An increasing percentage of cost-sharing is falling upon our patients, which may lead to increased stress over medical bills and poor health outcomes. We should be able to screen patients who are "at risk" of facing financial barriers to care in order to craft a treatment plan that achieves the best possible health outcome and prevents undue stress from accumulating medical bills.
Why not add a screening question to the EHR to identify patients that are at high-risk of facing financial barriers?
