Physician satisfaction has declined due to inability to practice at the full scope of their education and training. Physicians have been losing their ability to make the best care decision for their patients due to limitations placed by insurance companies and hospital administrators. Physicians are charged with producing a specific number of relative value units in order to justify their salaries and in some cases, maintain their current pay. Physicians are under time restraints with their patients and do not have time to adequately address complex patient needs. We must return to the autonomy of medicine back to physicians and allow them to function at the full scope of their practice and training. Physicians were trained in medicine but have allowed insurance companies and hospital administrators to dictate the path of medicine as though it is an exclusive business entity. Given this, there must be a balance between business and the service of medicine and healthcare.
