One way of decreasing treatment intensity in childbirth is to involve more midwives in the care of low-risk pregnancies, however there are currently only about 11,000 CNMs in the US according to the American Midwifery Certification Board, while in the UK there are roughly 21,000 according to the Royal College of Midwives. What are the barriers to training more midwives and developing a more robust midwife presence in the US?
