Most would agree that achieving high value is a worthy goal for our healthcare system. However, the definition of “value” in healthcare is highly variable. To some, value is a simple ratio of inputs (costs) and outputs (health outcomes). To others, value is a complex amalgam of individual patient considerations, systemic resource usage, and population health factors. There are also those who argue that “value” is effectively just a synonym for cost-cutting. How do you conceptualize value in healthcare? Why is it important to focus on this concept of value in the present day?
