Thanks to all of our experts for their willingness to participate in this online forum. Over the course of the next 10 days, I will post one question per day to guide the discussion.
The topic of physician-scientist training has received much attention in recent years, both from those who support dual-degree programs, such as the NIH-sponsored Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), and from those who believe these programs are not an appropriate use of time and resources. This will continue to be an important dialogue both at the NIH and at academic medical centers around the country and world.
Over the course of this discussion we will cover a number of topics, but let’s start with a broad, warm-up question to kick things off: what are the current training options for individuals interested in pursuing a career a physician-scientist? What are some pros and cons of the various options?
