While there are many public and private sector funding sources, there is also a significant investment in junior physician-scientists by universities in the form of start-up packages. How can physician-scientists trainees position themselves to be attractive candidates for junior faculty positions? How do you begin negotiations for start-up funds? What is an adequate amount to truly set up a modern laboratory? When in our training process should we begin to plan for a transition to the role of a more independent investigator, and how can this be balanced with clinical training in residency/fellowship?

As a parallel question, we live in a world increasingly driven by RVUs where young physician-scientists are being asked to support a greater percentage of their salary with clinical duties. How much external funding is required to obtain sufficient protected time for research?
