I think it would be helpful to expand upon the point that Jason is making in the previous thread, which is establishing upfront expectations and obtaining key information before choosing a thesis lab. Given that a student is committing at least 4 years to the lab they choose and the mentor is committing a very significant amount of time to the student during that training period, what are the questions that the mentor and mentee should discuss before officially selecting a PhD lab. Given that some of these questions may be very specific and difficult for some to ask, any suggestions on how to respectfully articulate these questions would also be helpful. Addressing issues beyond the research project, such as funding, potential for moving to a different institution, etc. can be discussed.
