With the advent of EMR, it is incredibly easy to order tests for patients as a clinician-in-training. Additionally, as the healthcare costs of the patient are so far removed from decision-making process of the physician, the healthcare system has found itself in a paradigm in which physicians have a tendency to “over order” testing when it may not in fact be a financially sound decision. If as clinicians we could have a basic concept of the relative cost associated with each test we propose to order, it would undoubtedly influence the decision-making process. Therefore, our team proposes making an application that would show dollar signs for the relative price of orders. For example, when deciding between ordering two tests, if one cost “$” while another cost “$$$” to reflect the actual cost of each test being cheap and expensive, respectively, it would make every clinician aware of the financial decisions they are making on behalf of their patients.
