Patients headed to the Emergency Room can spend significant time in the waiting room before being seen. Once they are seen, their nurse, who has multiple competing priorities between patient care of other patients and documentation, is often rushed and faces slowing down to go over the patient's home medication list. More often then not, the medications listed in the EMR are not an accurate representation of what the patient is taking, and the MedRec is essential for the physician to provide tailored interventions while the patient is in the hospital.
Allowing patients in the waiting room to enter their current medication list via an airport-like automated check-in kiosk will free up valuable time for nurses and thus physicians to spend more time in complex clinical tasks- setting up IV's, talking with the patient about their presenting illness, rather than an simple administrative tasks- completing a form of what medications are taken.
