The DHMC Neuro-oncology program is designing a Decision Support tool for newly diagnosed patients with a primary brain tumor facing complex treatment options. A Needs Assessment exploring patient barriers to making difficult decisions found a profound need to address existential and emotional concerns, as well as medical knowledge deficits. Our application will be programmed to reach patients on multiple platforms and will incorporate patient specific diagnostic detail and prognostic factors. This will link to information geared to the level of detail and sophistication chosen to fit the patient’s needs. Treatment options will be entered and linked to information regarding the practical aspects of the treatment, risks and potential benefits. Patients are prompted to explore personal values, emotions, and sources of stress/conflict affecting them. Emotion sensing technology would dovetail nicely, allowing patients to recognize their emotions to allow deep personalization of the decision
