The discussion thus far about stereotypes has been robust. I would like to transition into our next topic of work/life balance. I find this "term" means different things to different people and there is not a singular definition that encompasses what everyone means when they use this term. As a mid-career, approaching senior surgeon, I think of it now as how can I remain fulfilled in my professional and personal life without burning out or short changing either one? I have probably always leaned towards short changing my personal life. I am eager to hear the group discuss this question. We have asked if their are issues unique to being female, however through the years, I have appreciated this is not a women's issue, rather most young surgeons are interested in balance. I look forward to tying together the stereotype discussion with this one, as societal stereotypes of family roles come into play here.
