There is a possibility that the outcomes of the trial in medicine residents will be different than the outcomes in surgical residents. More specifically, that the outcomes of one will show benefit of more flexible duty hours, while one will show benefit to the current duty hour restrictions. Have you considered this possibility? Does there necessarily need to be one set of rules that apply to all specialties? Or is there a role for differential work hour rules? And if the latter, what might this mean for attraction of medical students to certain fields?
