For most international readers, I think it is important for them to understand the differences between UK hospital births (generally managed by midwives too, while nominally under OB departments and free-standing midwifery units where a different group of midwives are in charge. In many respects it is an issue of continuity, with hospital births managed, with some OB involvement, by three different groups of midwives (ante, intra and postpartum) vs full continuity by single group of midwives in freestanding birth centre. Have I got that right?
