As a medical student taking a "fifth year", I often wonder if one year is enough to master the diverse (and often competing) learning goals of "fourth year" (e.g. preparing to be a competitive residency candidate, pursuing non-clinical interests, taking electives outside a specialty of interest to complete a well-rounded education, etc.) highlighted in this timely perspective piece.

My question is: Some medical schools are moving toward curricula that have students complete core clinical clerkships by the end of second year, thereby affording TWO years post-clerkship to support self-directed completion of diverse learning goals. Can restructuring medical school in this way help meet the needs of students & training programs (perhaps alongside alterations in the residency application process that are suggested in this piece)?
