I'd like to turn to a more personal topic. The last sentence of Dr. Koven's essay depicts a chilling scene: an intelligent, compassionate physician sitting on the edge of despair. We have spent the past few days discussing your thoughts on what has led to this situation and touched upon ways that we might improve it, both as individuals and as organizations. As we near the end of our conversation, I remain hopeful about the ability of our community to reclaim human relationship as central to the practice of medicine. I recognize, however, that this hope will be more difficult to sustain once I am practicing primary care and experiencing the challenges you've described on a daily basis. I am therefore eager to hear your reflections on how you maintain your resiliency and preserve your hope day-to-day. What advice would you offer to my colleagues and me who are enthusiastically beginning careers in primary care?
