I would also like to congratulate Dr. Talan and his co-authors on a very elegant study that certainly adds to acute care practices (in fact, I referenced the study to one of the emergency medicine residents last night in the care of a patient with a skin abscess!) My questions are regarding measurements made using point-of-care ultrasound. First, given the disorganized, irregular shape of most of these lesions, it can be challenging to adequately measure each of the 3 dimensions sonographically. Was there a standard protocol for this to ensure consistency across exams? Second, did the authors consider a post-drainage ultrasound exam to evaluate for residual purulence? Finally, would the authors further clarify the calculations and rationale used to determine the area of erythema? Again, thank you for your important work.
