One tension I've observed in preventing burnout in myself and peers is balancing individual and systemic factors. How much do we try to empower individuals to become more resilient, and how much do we need to focus on making systemic cultural change?

There is currently a national conversation going on about the very high rates of sexual assaults on college campuses. While different in many ways, I do see some parallels between "rape culture" and the "hidden curriculum". Sometimes the push for resiliency training classes can feel a bit like advocating for women's self defense classes. It can give a sense of missing the larger issue of the abusive culture.

That said, I have found things like yoga and reflective writing very helpful for coping with the challenges of medical school, so I don't want to suggest resiliency training isn't valuable. But how do we find the balance of addressing individual versus systemic factors?
