It seems from this study by Dr. Gillinov and colleagues that one of the major pitfalls of amiodarone (if not THE major pitfall) is the side effect profile. However, amiodarone seemed to lead to a quicker resolution of AF and, therefore, fewer patients were placed on anticoagulation which led to fewer bleeding events. Should drug developers be focused on creating an alternative to amiodarone with a better side effect profile? If such a drug existed, would it change your thinking on rate vs. rhythm control for post-op AF?
