There are a deficiency of tools available for home monitoring of life long afflicting, Cystic Fibrosis. A disease that costs $25000 annually, in young adults and children and is characterized with waxing and waning course.

-Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by chronic and recurrent productive cough, dyspnea and wheezing. Characterized by Airflow obstruction on Spirometry and elevated sweat chloride levels
-Most common cause of severe chronic lung disease in young adults
-Estimated 30,000 cystic fibrosis patients in the US
-According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed every year, and more than 70% are identified by the time a child turns 2 years old.

Clinical Significance
-Close monitoring and early intervention by a multidisciplinary CF team results in better patient outcomes and less frequent hospitalizations
-Otherwise there is a progressive reduction in lung function; FVC, FEV1, TLC and reduced pulmonary diffusion
-Costs for patients with mild, moderate, and severe disease are US $10,151, US $25,647, and US $33,691 per year respectively. The majority of costs are accounted for by hospital inpatients (58%), followed by pharmaceuticals (29%), medical services (10%), complications (2%), and diagnostic tests (1%)1
-Early follow up in regional cystic fibrosis units help manage the disease better
-Usually patients are young, and are ‘Tech savvy’
