The Tracker Lending Library allows physicians to "prescribe" trackers to patients who need to increase their physical activity and don't own trackers. Patients obtain trackers from office staff immediately following appointments, and receive help with set up if needed, so they leave with a working tracker to use until their follow-up visit. Our research found that many people who know about trackers don't purchase them due to cost, choice confusion, or unwillingness to try something they are unsure will help them. Setting up a tracker is difficult for many as well. The Tracker Lending Library overcomes these barriers while involving a trusted figure - the physician - in recommending and following up with patients. The Tracker Lending Library pilot is planned for three sites in September 2017 in lower income regions of Greater Boston. Each Tracker Lending Library consists of 25 Fitbits, which were donated to and refurbished by RecycleHealth. It also includes a check-out form, instructions for tracker set up, a short guide for physicians on introducing trackers to patients, and surveys for participating patients, office staff, and physicians.
