Home pulse oximetry is commonly used in patients with lung disease such as COPD and those requiring home oxygen therapy. However, current technology relies on the user to initiate the process of taking a measurement and is not monitored continuously, creating the potential for patients to have low oxygen saturation levels for an extended period of time between measurements.
One solution is to develop a pulse oximeter worn around the wrist for continuous monitoring. This can be achieved with reflectance pulse oximetry, a promising new technology already utilized in forehead pulse oximeters. Since inaccuracies tend to occur when the sensor is placed in a suboptimal area , this device integrates the sensor into the wristband above the wearer’s radial artery.
This device includes an integrated watch and heart rate monitor with a large print display and operates via Bluetooth, making it ideal for use in two target markets:
a) Home users with lung disease can monitor their oxygen saturation levels on demand and sync measurements with an app on their smartphone. This data is stored in the user’s account and is accessible to corresponding software on their physician’s computer through the cloud.
b) Individuals in a long-term care setting (e.g. retirement home) can monitor their oxygen saturation levels in real time, catching drops in oxygen saturation earlier. Measurements are be transmitted via Bluetooth or WiFi to a central monitoring system, allowing staff to intervene sooner and prevent complications. Patients’ data will also be available to their physicians via the cloud.
