Integrated Medication Adherence Service (IMAS)
Low Medication Adherence (LMA) is a major barrier to achieving benefit from medications that have otherwise been shown to be effective in clinical trials. It is estimated that 50% of medications for chronic diseases are not taken as prescribed, and this may account for 10% of all hospitalizations. Currently LMA is difficult to detect unless patients volunteer the information.
Until now, no solution has demonstrated itself as effective, scalable, and affordable. IMAS plans to change this.
IMAS is a system that creates an easy-to-use, precise medication delivery model using wearable RFID technology. This serves two key functions: 1) verifying with the patient that the correct medications are taken at the correct doses 2) creating a virtual logbook of what is being taking that provides confirmation to the patient and other stakeholders of what is actually taken. With the help of tactile, audio, and visual reminders via the wearable device, patients can take the guesswork and burden out of trying to remember to take medications in what can often be complicated regimen schedules.
Utilizing a patient-facing app, the patient can quickly access data about their medications, their adherence history, as well as log adverse medication events. Patients can allow this data to be viewable via a caregiver-facing interface to help family members track adherence remotely as well as a clinician-facing interface that would allow clinicians to track adherence of their patients.
IMAS streamlines the logistics of medication delivery and minimizes errors due to forgetfulness and complexity. However, we as physicians recognize that most patients stop taking medications willfully and often rationally. IMAS will connect patients who are non-adhering to medically trained case workers who can help determine why a patient is having difficulty, and work with the patient to identify a solution. Together.
