Liquid medication overdose in the pediatric populations leads to over 70,000 ER cases yearly in the U.S. Acetaminophen overdose alone, costs the healthcare system over $4M dollars yearly. Coupled with the fact that 1 in 3 parents is health illiterate, compliance and barriers in reading technically complicated numbers and medical terminology make dosing errors extremely common. Commonly used measuring cups and oral syringes have errors in volume marking 75% of the time and user error with these devices is reported to occur in 43% of dosages.
Our product, the RightDose precision medication cap, seeks to facilitate dosing for parents by reducing overdose and increasing compliance. It is engineered specifically to address the challenges of viscous fluid flow and user-error tendencies. The RightDose cap fits seamlessly onto existing liquid medication bottles with an integrated, detachable spoon-like dispenser. The dispensing volume can be tuned using an intuitive screw plunger design, and once the volume is set, the user simply tilts the bottle to fill the dispenser, detaches the dispenser, and administers the medication. Electronics integrated into the cap also keep track of time from last dispense, and uses audiovisual cues to alert the user when the next dose is due. As compared to existing devices, our device is able to maintain a volume precision of 95% throughout infinite dosing cycles.
Preliminary user testing amongst parents and physicians reveals a strong preference for our device due to its accuracy and ease of use. Implementation of this product aims to reduce the incidence of overdose in the pediatric population and reduce preventable healthcare costs.
Comprising of graduate students at MIT and a clinician at the Brigham and Women's hospital, our multidisciplinary team brings together expertise from the medical field, electrical and mechanical engineering, and a passion for entrepreneurship. Together, we are equipped and eager to attack the high prevalence of liquid medication overdose.
