More than 500,000 procedures each year in reconstructive, transplant, and vascular surgery involve a connection of blood vessels that is necessary to provide blood flow to downstream tissue. Invariably, there is a risk of clot formation. Detecting clot formation in a timely manner allows intervention to remove the clot before it permanently blocks the vessels and is key to preventing catastrophic and expensive surgical failures. Due to limitations of current modalities, routine monitoring occurs only in the plastic surgery (reconstruction) market, where up to 15% of cases will require emergency salvage for clot formation. Delays associated with current monitoring techniques result in a 50% failure rate for salvage attempts. The non-reimbursed financial loss for a hospital ranges between $174,000 and $577,000 per instance, depending on the surgery.
Sonavex has developed EchoSure to detect clots earlier and more reliably than existing modalities, to enable successful salvage. The two-part solution consists first of an absorbable marker placed underneath the vessels at the surgical site (EchoMark) and ultrasound software (EchoFind) to automatically collect and calculate blood flow data. This makes it possible for nurses without specialized sonographic training to monitor for clot formation during their current routine once-per-hour examinations using a point-of-care ultrasound. EchoFind analyzes and quantifies flow trends, supporting early clot detection prior to complete blockage.
1) Reduces surgical failures by earlier detection ($174,000 - $577,000/failure)
2) Decreases false positives and resulting unnecessary surgeries ($20,000/each)
3) Provides objective information to eliminate clinical ambiguity & frustration
4) Saves hospitals $6,700 per use, including monitoring outside of ICU setting
