With all of the advances in patient treatment one gap still remains: limited ability to transfer pertinent health information to first-responders when a patient is incoherent or unable to speak in case of emergency. Very few people carry medical information with them, so the only record of their current medical conditions and medications are at their doctor’s office. That does not help when a patient has been in an accident or other emergency situation and speed of diagnosis and early treatment is critical.
If no patient history is available, medical care requires testing which can delay potentially life-saving measures compared to having knowledge of a patient’s medical history immediately upon arrival at a medical facility. If a primary care physician office is closed (or not taking phone calls) or the patient does not recall key details of their current medications, obtaining an accurate medical history can be difficult and time consuming. ICE apps on phones are better than nothing but considering what people keep on their phones the security risks with allowing access into a patient's phone are tremendous.
MedeStat solutions handle these issues by allowing any individual to carry their own self-contained medical information product using our patent-pending process. Currently for the most rapid market adoption from both patient creation and care provider consumption is to create a Quick Response (QR) code that can be scanned by any smartphone or any device with QR reading capabilities. This will give them the ability to read a customer’s LifeGuard badge or pocket card to immediately gain access to the patient medical history, including emergency contact information, medical conditions, allergies, and current medications while maintaining full compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
With MedeStat’s solutions, patient care providers including EMS personnel, Emergency Care Facilities, and other medical personnel will be able to access the information they need to begin more focused patient care. MedeStat’s solutions are designed so that as information changes patients can update and create a new QR code instantly so that there is no delay in protection.
With the recent increase in acts of terrorism and natural disasters that render wireless communications and data networks useless there is a critical need for instantly retrievable patient information during these events due to the large quantity of trauma patients. Our solution works seamlessly through these events as a disaster-resistant solution since no Internet connection is required to retrieve patient information. All printed products are self-contained requiring nothing other than a smart device to read with no reliance on cellular or data connections to retrieve information.
Our printed solutions use weatherproof paper and Military Grade stock allows for resistance to water, sweat, and other daily issues that plague plain paper solutions. Our solution is also easily adapted into a B2B environment so that a patient’s primary care physician, hospital, or other care provider would be able to update and reprint MedeStat codes directly from a patient’s medical record at the end of any visit where the patient’s medical conditions or medications have changed.
The use of QR codes also allows for HIPAA compliance since scanning the codes requires physical access. This is also one of the reasons that RFID is not in use now, as evidenced by the fact that credit card companies no longer us that technology. Information could be accessed without physical access to an RFID product, which would be in violation of HIPAA. In addition, the limited information our solutions hold is beneficial during a medical emergency but useless in a crime of identity theft. Our solutions do not hold Social Security Number, health insurance policy information, or driver’s license/ID information that could be used to compromise security.
