Mental illness is a leading cause of disability associated with significant morbidity and preventable health care utilization. Despite the high prevalence of depression, about half of patients are undiagnosed and many are undertreated. Timely identification of behavioral health needs contributes to provision of high quality health care within a primary care setting. UCLA developed behavioral health screening utilizes a real-time, web-based platform to gather and interpret behavioral health screening, and uses these to personalize care. Patients complete psychometrically validated behavioral health measures on an ipad device. Screening identifies areas of increased symptoms, and includes strength-based measures to identify areas of positive functioning. Assessments are value-added for patients, as they are provided with a clearer picture of treatment progress and are encouraged to develop areas of strength. Patient handouts reinforce personalized education and support positive coping.
